This was the peak of the squall, boats everywhere having problems, and visability was nil.
We got through OK.

Wings Reaching Under Kite
smu image, western circuit regatta 2007
Reaching for home
With the pole on the headstay, the main in and jib already up the kite adds the real power and some extra speed on a reach.

Approaching The Mark
We have the pole up and the kite is hooked up, but what will the wind be inthe next leg?
We saw the first two boats hold off but the computer says raise the kite, so we did and it paid well.

Judy gets the main in while Fred checks out the close competion
Who are these old folks who insist on living on an old IOR boat and racing their house?

Bow Man Marco
The bow man has the glamour job, or so it would seem from the outside, but there is a lot of work behind that job. He stands alone at the bow, and his skill is exposed for all to see, and he has no helper, he is the man.
Marco knows no other way, he has no other job.

Crew on Rail
We're a bit shorthanded on this day, seven people on the rail including Fred steering, but Wings is headed upwind anyway.

Get the Jib Down
We hoisted the ounce and a half kite on a jibe set and headed off down wind heeled well over and trying to get sorted out for the rest of the leg.
I have no recollection of this mark. I know the day and I know we must have been there or this photo could not have been taken, but do I remember this one mark rounding with so much happening and this much wind?
No. it just blends in with all the other 18 marks on that day.

Fred and Tobias douse the kite
An easy drop after the finish; Fred goes forward to help Tobias and the spinnker comes down cleanly and fast. Now for the beer.

Coming home under kite after a great day of sailing in Singapore. I went to the bow for this shot and to get ready for the takedown and Bob drove the boat to the finish.

8.54 Knots and no kite
wingssail image: fredrick roswold
Windy
Omar Agoes trims jib and main and steers as we cruise in heavy conditions. Well, Omar is a Laser sailor, he is used to single-handing.
We had the kite ready but in the windy conditions we just didn't want to set it, particularly when the boats ahead of us, Foxy Lady and Panic, were both going bare headed after terrific knock downs with their spinnakers up. Besides, we were going in the mid eights already.
Later the wind died a bit and we should have set, but in the rain and 1.5 miles from the finish, we didn't feel like it.

On Board Wings
Racing in the Western Circuit Regatta out of Raffles Marina in Singapore, from left: Brendon, Mike, Fred, Jenni Clark.
On the downwind leg the crew has a time to think over events, and contemplate sailing.
Don't worry, the leeward mark is comming up fast and we'll be frantically busy again in just a few moments.

Jibing

Jibing in light air
This time we didn't keep the kite filled through the jibe, but it filled again in a second, and we are definitely showing some improvement in the boat handling.

Here we come reaching in while Foxy Lady points up. I had room to stay above them, but a few seconds after this shot the J-24 on his bow (not visable but you can see their wake) tacked to port and we had nowhere to go. I dodged down to miss the J-24 getting quite close to Foxy Lady and Bill took offence to that and hoisted a protest flag. Later, after he won the race, he decided he didn't need to spend Sunday afternoon in the protest room so he didn't file. Too bad, it would have been an interesting discussion.

There are boats of all sizes and types in our small fleet sailing out of Raffles Marina. Here the Singapore Managment University J 24 jibes across the bow of Swan 53 Frangi Pangi Girl and one of the sport boats crosses astern.
