I ran across these images sent to us last year by the Discovery Bay Yacht Club. Since this is supposed to be a blog about sailing, I thought I'd post them, even if they are a bit old.

From a hilltop we spotted this abandoned village, and decided to find our way down to it.

We found a store room full of pots and this large, flat pan. What was stored in these pots? What was the pan used for? Why were they left here?

Sam A Wan View

We scrambled far up the hillside above Sam A Wan and found great views of Wings and the surroundings. The hill was steep and we didn't want to go down, so we roamed around the ridges above and found a better trail.

Wandering around in the hills we found other villages, most abandoned. The houses there were unlocked and open, and inside we found personal belongings and furniture, and on one house, this wooden threshing machine.

This is Lai Chi Wo, a traditional chinese farming village. The sites of villages like this are carefully selected, taking fully into consideration all aspects of fung shui, including the hill and forest behind, the view of the water, a stream flowing by.

We went for a walk around Sam A Wan and found this noodle house; popular with the hikers who come here to explore the hills and abandoned villages.

Tap Mun village. This is the new plaza. A quiet place.

Tap Mun, a Chinese fishing village. No roads to this island, and no airfield, means that the people here depend on water traffic for access to the mainland.

Wong Shek Sailing Center

Far to the North of Hong Kong, in a remote wilderness area of the Sai Kung Peninsula, is this sailing center where all sorts of sailing dingys and windsurfers, and excellent training classes, are available. This center is heavily used.

Pak Sha Wan (Hebe Haven)

Pak Sha Wan, in this beautiful setting, is the home of Hebe Haven Yacht Club and several other marinas. It is a center of sailing in Hong Kong.

On the way though Victoria Harbor, this is a typical scene as several lighering barges swarm around a contanier ship and transfer the cargo.

Sailing to Sai Kung, we're away from the dock again, now cruising in Hong Kong waters.

The end of the line for our Shatin tour: we reached this pier on Tolo Harbor, reachable by dingy from a good anchorage. We could anchor Wings here and easily get to a train station for a different commute.

Another satellite city in the New Territories, Mah On Shan has the standard look: tall apartment blocks and concrete canyons. In the bases of these buildings are modern shopping malls, all looking exactly alike.

Beautiful Bridge

One more beautiful bridge. But notice how light the traffic is? This freeway and these bridges were built for the new airport on Lantau, and there is no commuting and not much goods transportation on this route.
