We visited this stunning cultural center/museum to watch the Tahitian Dancers in the open air theater, but before the show we toured all the exhibits

We attended only one performance in a theatical setting; most were on the lawns and small stages around Noumea, but the Tahitian Dancers put on a great show at the main outdoor stage at the Tjibaou Cultural Center. We sat on the grass on a natural amphitheater and they captivated us far into the night.

Warrior, Brit Chance 50, and old friend from Seattle racing memories. This is a more recent photo.

Boy, the tales of many lives this boat could tell: built in Europe, raced in SORC, raced in California, raced in Portland, Seattle (won everything for a few years), burned badly in a boatyard accident and written off by insurance, rebuilt, converted to cruiser, sailed to South Pacific, etc etc.

There is surely more to this story but I don't know much of it. The boat got back to California, new owners, Michelle and Robin, rebuilt again, sailed to Mexico, Panama, Galapagos, Easter Island, Pitcairn Island...

We bushwacked around some islands and saw a few of these fellows. But when we got back to the boat my arm started to hurt and swell up. It got as big as a football and it was over a week before it went down. So I guess these guys are poisonous.

We went ashore and climbed around, got lost, got into some sticker bushes, got a spider bite, then found our way back to the beach.

We spent a lot of time with Ed and Julie from Cinnabar walking around town and finding restraunts. One strange thing: The French wines we found in Noumea were uniformly bad. And even the red wine was chilled to nearly ice cold.

The French expatriates who live in New Calidonia or visit here for holidays are serious about their recreation. We found windsurfers and kitesurfers and water skiers and wakeboarders. We also found topless beaches. (Sorry, I didn't get any photos)

A lonely place for a quiet time away from the crowds. We sailed to Baie de Vincent and explored for a few days. The main restriction here is water depth; beyond the first islands the bay is too shallow for Wings

Mele Island

Hideaway Anchorage is here behind Mele Island. The reef offers good protection, there is good snorkling, a good restraunt on the island, a long beach on the mainland to walk on on, and you can catch a taxi to town from here. We spent a few quiet weeks in this place.

Good Bye Genny

There was no warning to this failure. In fact the sail, while well used, had no given problems before this, but here we were, three minutes to go, and with little sound and no drama, it just ripped from leech to luff.

I don't know how Ed found this empty spot of water where this photo was taken because when I dove below to dig out the #3 there were boats every where and when I came up a minute later we were in a crowd right at the line.

OK, we go with the #3

We are off to the first mark after changing to the #3 jib. This is the right sail for the upwind work, but we could have used the bigger genoa in the off wind leg down to Mele Island.

These sails are all getting a bit old. The one that blew out was a kevlar genny which we raced with in Seattle for three years then used, foolishly maybe, while cruising all over the Pacific. I think it's finished now. This number 3 jib is even more ancient, and we've already been patching it forever. Can't last much longer either I guess.

Certainly the best "pick up crew" we ever had, and one of the best crews we ever sailed with, these folks were great. With three minutes to go to the start the jib blew out. I threw the helm over to Ed and told him to stay close to the start but don't hit anybody, and I ran below to find another sail.

The crew on deck got the old jib pieces down and hooked up the new jib I pushed up through the hatch in record time, especially since it was the first time on the boat for most of them. When I got back on the helm I said to Ed, "Where are we?" He replied, "This bouy you see just ahead of you is the pin end of the line, we're starting."

By that time the sheet leads had been changed and the new jib was going up and we made the start on time and in great position. Three minutes from disaster to good start.

You can't ask for anything better.

Riding the Windvane to Vanuatu

We found a variety of wind on this trip from Fiji to Vanuatu, not every day at sea was windy and bright like this photo; in fact we had some calms and had to motor. That gave us some chance to rest, read, and play on the computer. But finally we got into the trades and the last day or so was glorious sailing like this.

To our way of thinking this is the best harbor in the Pacific. It's a bit deep for anchoring but there are a lot of moorings, and of course, you can tie up to the shore if you want to pay a bit more.

We spent a couple of days cruising around Savu Savu Bay with Jim and his family, had some great food, drank too much grog, and had a good time. But eventually it was time to drop them off at their village, and they waved good bye as they walked ashore.

Anchored far away from Savu Savu, across the bay in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by reefs, we spent a nervous night with squalls and rain, but with the reefs and the darkness, we couldn't move.

We came to Albert Cove inside the reef on the NW side of Rambi Island and anchored in gin clear water off this beautiful beach. Some other boats were already there and we saw their dingies pulled up on the shore.

We went ashore with some other cruisers who were also anchored at Albert Cove and the local people there, decendants of people from Banaban Island, entertained us with dancing.

After the Banabans entertained us with their dancing we drifted down to the beach and chatted with our friends from the other boats anchored inside the reef.

We sailed around Rambi Island and found Katherine Cove on the SE side. Here was another good anchorage and no crowds.

Ashore at Katherine Cove we went for a walk and saw this church. On this Monday afternoon it was empty but we could tell from the well worn pews and the cleanly swept floors that it was used on Sundays and we'd bet that if you were here on a Sunday you would hear the singing all the way to the boat.

We went for a walk with Ed and Lynne from Constance and got caught in a downpour. Heading off into the jungle we found some banana plants and their big leaves gave us some protection

Graduation Day at Katherine Cove

We heard a brass band echoing through the hills on Rambi Island during our walk and we followed the sound. On a hill-top overlooking Katherine Cove there was this small primary school and it was graduation day. We met the school master and some of the children and some of their parents. This was the highlight of the day.
