In Mazatlan

Malecon is all new

Pedro & Lola's with Jock

Mazatlán's old town is totally rejuvenated with new sidewalks and street surfaces, new lighting, and spruced up buildings. It looks good and after dark it is gorgeous. In fact, we found the whole city of Mazatlan to be refreshed and newly up-scale and we enjoyed our stop here. In the old town district there are many new sidewalk cafes and most had lively crowds and music in the open air. We felt like we'd flashed back to Cartegena, only more alive with a younger crowd. Even in Zona Dorado there were many music clubs and the streets were alive day and night.

We also found, again this year, Jock Budelman at Pedro and Lola's at the Peralta Square. Still playing and talking boats and motorcycles. We first saw Jock here in 1997. He now keeps his boat Chaunsom at Saltspring Island in B.C. and spends summers there. In the winter Jock comes back to Mazatlán to ride bikes and play at Pedro and Lola's.

We are the dark boat with the big numbers on the sail, US 8986. The grey boat in the left of the group, was the Express 37, Harlequin, they were over early and had to go back. We had already passed them at that point but that definitely put us in a commanding position at the start.

Burned Battery Pack
Pyewacket's Lithium batteries overheated and caught fire. Some heroic crew member braved the clouds of dense and acrid smoke to go in and cut the cables so they boxes could be pulled out. Scary.

The New Main
This sail has been a year in the works since the previous main failed (under warranty) last March. China Sail Factory agreed to replace it but that agreement however took a couple of months to work out and then the completion of this sail was delayed for a few months, until late November, for other reasons. Finally it was shipped to the wrong country instead of here to us in Mexico and that mess took two more months to sort out. Total, one year. Well now we have it and we're glad. It is designed exactly to my specifications and it is a really nice sail.
