But Now the Winch Stands Idle
Oil Seal Change
We lifted the Engine
The project took 4 days. Every morning we lifted the engine up from the beds to access the lower parts. Each night we set it back down and dismantled the lifting rig so that we could resume life in the cabin.
Some of the tools we used
We bought some new tools to get just to get the right sockets that wouldn't slip on the stuck bolts.
The Transmission is Off
To change the oil seal we had to remove the transmission, flex plate, flywheel, and flywheel housing.
The bolts
We bought several new bolts to replace ones which were rounded trying to remove them. We had to cut one, then it almost fell out.
The old and new oil seals are visible in the lower left of this photo.
New oil seal
This is what it looks like installed. Putting the new one in like this is why we did this project.
Makeshift table
Each night we lowered the motor, covered it with a sheet, and used makeshift tables like this to be able to eat. Some people would move out for this job, but we did not.
Regulator Problem
Bad Readings
This regulator failed and started to read ZERO on the battery voltage. We took it out and were preparing to make a photo for Balmar, the manufacturer, but then the reading changed to 10.9, still not right. Meanwhile the spare, which was new, also started to read ZERO on battery voltage. Two identical problems on two units? Must be something else going on. The alternator itself was suspect and we changed that. Still no solution. A few phone calls to Balmar later, and lots of investigation and measuring, plus some rewiring, no cause of this problem was revealed. Then the original one, now reinstalled, failed completely. We went to the second back-up but by now it was a serious problem. We've ordered some new ones and are hoping for the best. If it does not get all resolved we will have to go back to the marina.
