Chart Showing Our Trip to Sumatra

Crossing to Sumatra

This chart shows many things:
1. Rumb Line, the direct route from Thailand to Sumatra (Blue Line)
2. Our actual route (Purple Line), this is our path for two days.
3. Wind barbs or representations (colored flags). The red ones mean we can expect twenty knots, instead we had 43 knots
4. Ship traffic close to us(green triangles)
5. Our position at the end of Day Two, finally out of the wind

This doesn't look like much: the wind isn't that strong, the distance not too great. But in reality the wind was as high as 43, not twenty, and the seas were rough.

Out strategy was to go left of the rumb line to get out of the wind, and we did that. On day three we tacked and sailed due west to our destination.

The ships, on the other hand, were never a worry even though the chart shows so many of them. Actually our new AIS system kept us aware of the traffic and kept us from any surprises. That part, even in 35 knots of wind, was easy.

At 5:00 PM we saw this black line. It hit before 6:00pm and lasted until midnight. Top windspeed we saw was 42.9 knots true wind, but it was 38-39 for hours.

Fixing the boat at Rawai

We thought it was ready

Fixing the hydraulics

Even though we thought we were ready to go we had some equipment failures just before leaving Thailand and one on the crossing itself. Nothing major, and Fred fixed them all.

1. We blew out the seals in the hydraulic backstay cylinder when we set sail coming out of Yacht Haven. Fred changed the cylinder then rebuilt it. We reinstalled it and tested it before leaving Thailand. It was fine through all the bad weather, what a test.

2. We also had a water maker failure and Fred replaced some parts and seals and it worked again.

3. The final failure on the way to Indonesia was a blown pressure accumulator tank for the fresh water system. After this we had to use the manual pump for fresh water (no showers) on the crossing. Finally Fred swapped it for the one in the saltwater system, where it was not critical, and we restored the water system to full functionality.

A race boat sails by before we leave, a warning?

Was this a warning? A squall blew through just as we prepared to depart but then it passed and the weather was mild. We set out in 12-20 knots of wind, pretty much exactly what was forecast, which lasted for the whole day and was good sailing.

The bad weather started at 6:00 PM, 40 miles out of Phuket Thailand.
