Tanna Island, Vanuatu

Heading up to the volcano

Sulphur Springs

We see the volcano from sea level. Here this river runs hot enough on one side to cook a pig and cool enough on the other to put your feet in. On the hillside above large stones were landing; we could here them land with a thud. There is a village here and the volcano seemed to loom over it ominously.

Startled

We stood on the rim and looked into the mouth. Lava on the floor of the volcano glowed and there was the sound of rushing air like the breath of a giant. Then a low rumble and an sudden explosion of lava which startled us. There is no way you can be prepared for this outburst of noise and fire. Your heart stops. You feel the heat. You are shocked. Stones as large as televisions fly up into the sky and rain down onto the rim. Several people moved back after that and some went down to the truck. Too dangerous up here.

Each burst was accompanied by a roar and a boom which shook us.

Not a Nice Morning

Hanging in there

We were shocked at how nasty it turned outside of the Heads and we wondered how the Aussie weather guys had got it so wrong. Well, we decided, they must have been asleep.

Running

After a day the wind shifted to the south and we eased the main and ran before it, still reefed and carrying no jib.

Inside

Outside it might be blowing and wet and noisy and cold and the sea might be angry, but down below it's quiet and peaceful

This is more like it

Eventually it did calm down on this trip and we got into some nice sailing.

And one Morning; we sighted New Cal

Australia had it's share of rough times, but once you get to paradise you tend to forget it all.
